February 24, 2015

At approximately 9:15 a.m. this morning, a live bullet was found on the floor of a New Prairie High School classroom. The building immediately moved into a lockdown status and a full search of the building commenced. The search was carried out by members of the NPUSC Administrative team and was supported by officers of the La Porte County Sheriiff's Department and Sheriff John Boyd. An explosives canine detector from the Michigan City Police Department also participated in the search.

The search concluded at approximately 11:45 a.m. and no evidence of a weapon was discovered. The lockdown was lifted at that time and the normal class schedule resumed. An ongoing police investigation will continue.

The New Prairie United School Corporation has announced its updated make-up day schedule due to recent inclement weather cancellations on January 9, and February 2, 12, 2015.  All NPUSC students will now attend school on March 13, and May 28, 29, 2015 per the 2014-15 school calendar.

Community Health Needs Assessment

NPUSC is assisting Franciscan St. Anthony Health Michigan City and IU Health LaPorte Hospital in completing a Community Health Needs Assessment survey.  Franciscan St. Anthony Health - Michigan City and IU Health LaPorte Hospital are reaching out to LaPorte County residents to get their views on the most important health needs in their communities.  Please take five to seven minutes to share what you think are the most pressing health needs in our community by going to link

Resident responses to the online survey will be used to help each hospital determine its community benefit strategies for the years 2016-2018.  In 2013, Franciscan St. Anthony Health Michigan City and IU Health LaPorte Hospital invested more than $98 million to improve the health of the community and provide free or reduced cost healthcare to qualifying residents.

Please take a few moments to help guide the hospitals' strategies to make the most impact in the health of our community.
