Make-Up Day Announcement

March 17, 2014

Due to the disruptive winter weather our school corporation has experienced this school year, our make-up days continue to mount. The NPUSC has now cancelled school 12 times this year and have scheduled make-up days at the end of the school year. Based on this process, the final student day, at this time, is scheduled for Wednesday, June 4, 2014. Any additional cancelled days will prove problematic and threaten the commencement of Summer School, constrict the time period for Senior grades to be evaluated for graduation decisions, and deny valuable instructional minutes prior to the final round of state assessments in May.

Therefore, the NPUSC, after much deliberation and thought, has determined that any additional cancelled days that occur before April 18, 2014, will be made- up on Good Friday, April 18. This has been a difficult decision to reach. However, the use of Good Friday to schedule make-up classes would provide a degree of flexibility if the NPUSC faces another cancelled day. In the event that an additional cancelled day occurs after Good Friday is utilized, it will be added to the end of the current school year.

Our strong hope is that the remainder of the school year will remain intact and that no further cancellations will occur. Your understanding and support is appreciated as the NPUSC continues to establish the most effective responses to this extremely difficult winter season.

At the February 24, 2014 School Board meeting, the recommendation to schedule all remaining make up days at the end of the current school year and to postpone the NPHS Graduation Ceremony one week from June 1 to June 8, 2014 was approved.

Classes have been cancelled 12 times this year, forcing the NPUSC to make up 7 days after designated calendar snow days and 2 Indiana Department of Education waivers were utilized.  Based on this decision, the current make up schedule will begin on May 27, 2014, and extend through June 4, 2014, the final student day.  It is also important to remember that any additional cancelled days would be added to these identified dates.

This decision was only made after a deep and thorough review of possible options.  This examination of options included Saturday classes, extended hour days, Spring Break and Good Friday, and virtual classes.  In the final analysis, the Board approved option was believed to be the most effective and does provide scheduling flexibility for any possible cancellations that may yet occur.

Hopefully this communication will assist you in your planning processes.  Please contact your Building Principal or the Central Office with any questions.
