Power Outage

November 7, 2014

Dear NPUSC Parent /Guardian, Student, or School Community Member:

The Indiana Department of Education has approved a waiver for the NPUSC regarding the secondary school early dismissal on October 31, 2014, due to a power outage. Based on this approval, no make – up day will be required for New Prairie High School or New Prairie Middle School.

New Prairie Middle School Lead & Seed Youth Coalition

The New Prairie United School Corporation is pleased to announce the following awards presented to New Prairie Middle School.

On Wednesday, October 1, the New Prairie Middle School Lead & Seed Youth Coalition was selected by the La Porte County Drug Free Partnership as the 2014 Drug Free Communities Youth Coalition of the Year for all of La Porte County. This recognition is a result of their comprehensive ongoing Lead & Seed efforts to prevent or reduce youth substance abuse.

In addition, New Prairie Middle School student, Tyler Bowen was selected as Youth Coalition Leader of the Year for his leadership efforts with the New Prairie Middle School’s Lead & Seed Youth Coalition. Tyler is an 8th grader who has been actively engaged in this program for the past three years. Tyler’s contributions to his school and the La Porte County community are impressive and it is apparent why he was selected from youth throughout the county for his contributions in preventing or reducing substance abuse.

Finally, Mrs. Ruth Trujillo, New Prairie Middle School Counselor was selected as the 2014 La Porte County Prevention Leader of the Year from throughout all of La Porte County. Ruth leads the school’s Lead and Seed Program.

NPUSC Press Release

The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office and New Prairie United School Corporation has
announced that a police K9 search has been concluded at New Prairie High School
and no illegal substances were found. The New Prairie United School Corporation
recently contacted the Sheriff’s Office and elicited assistance with a search of the
school utilizing certified K9 assets.
On Thursday, September 4, 2014 at 12:45 CST, the administrative staff of New
Prairie High School ordered a lock-down of students and staff and canines and
their handlers from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office conducted a free air
search of all academic lockers; which totaled 998. The search was done with
no interaction between K9’s, students or teaching staff. The canine handlers and
school administrative staff were assisted by investigators from the La Porte County
Metro Operations Unit.
New Prairie United School Corporation Superintendent James Dermody stated:
“The New Prairie United School Corporation is appreciative of the efforts of the
La Porte County Sheriff’s Office and the La Porte County Metro Operations Unit.”
Superintendent Dermody added: “We are pleased with the relationship that our
Corporation enjoys with the Sheriff’s Office and we have partnered with them to keep
our students safe and to keep our buildings a safe learning environment.”
Sheriff Michael Mollenhauer stated: “The La Porte County Sheriff’s Office continues
to be proactive in our efforts to maintain safe learning atmospheres in our County’s
schools. We are pleased that our K9 program is being utilized to help insure a safe
school environment.” Sheriff Mollenhauer also stated: “We commend the New
Prairie United School Corporation for being proactive about keeping drugs from their
buildings. We share common goals and are committed to work together to maintain
safe schools.”

This K-12 program supports the creation of community learning centers that provide academic enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools. The program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children. New Prairie United School Corporation will be implementing a variety of after school programs for K-12 grades. The following programs will be added or enhanced for after school and summer opportunities:

Camp Invention, Jr. First Lego Club, First Lego Club, Young Astronauts, IXL Math, IXL Reading, Jr. Achievement, Achieve 3000, Girls on the Run, Jr. Achievement, PTLW Biomedical, PTLW Engineering, Achieve 3000, Beyond the Cougar Den, John Baylor ACT Prep, and Princeton Review SAT Prep.
